CHAPTER TEN

“You’re late,” Olivia said, hopping into the car with her. Olivia had been waiting behind the gas station ten minutes longer than agreed, but Emily knew enough about the woman to understand her major peeves. Punctuality was number one. Following the rules was number two.

“Sorry about that. It took me longer than I thought to go through the house.”

“Did you go in the bathroom?” Olivia asked.

“The bathroom?”

“You know, to see where it happened?”

Where Ed died. What a messed-up thing to ask. Especially now that Emily knew it was all a farce.

“Uh, no. I didn’t. But I did go through all of Ed’s hiding places.”

“And?”

Emily prepared to lie. She’d decided not to let on about what she knew. Ed was alive. They were likely waiting for him to make a mistake so they could take him out. “And I found his money.”

“What?”

Emily looked over her shoulder at the plastic bag she’d dug up. “Yep. It was buried in a planter.”

“That must be one huge planter to hold a million dollars.”

“Nope.”

Olivia blinked at her. “So then, how much did you recover?”

Ignoring Olivia’s question, Emily asked, “Where’s Flint?”

“Across the street picking up a few guns and getting a sandwich. He said he was hungry, and his stomach waits for no one. Now answer my question. How much?”

“Picking up guns from who?” Emily asked.

Olivia gave her an impatient look. “We know people, okay? Now tell me.”

This was a tricky thing to answer. She couldn’t let on that she knew Ed had skipped town with his life and his money. “I think it’s about one hundred thousand.”

“That’s all?”

“Yes.”

“What about the rest?” Olivia asked.

“Who knows? I mean, I didn’t find any papers, lockbox keys, anything to point us toward where he really had his money.”

“How’d you find that?” She looked at the bag.

“Ed left it in the planter where I had my spare key hidden. I noticed a corner of the bag sticking out of the potting soil when I bent over to grab the key,” she lied.

“Why would he leave it there?”

Emily shrugged. “Emergency cash, maybe. I don’t know.”

“Okay, well, I don’t have to tell you it’s not enough.”

Emily knew that, but where could they come up with another nine hundred thousand dollars? It wasn’t like she could sell her house and cash in Ed’s 401(k).

“Unfortunately,” Emily said, “Ed was too paranoid to leave a paper trail. The only person he really trusted was his brother.” Crap. His brother. Why hadn’t she thought about that before?

Ed had probably skipped town with Merrill, but Merrill was irresponsible and arrogant. He was a dirty cop who truly believed he could get away with anything. Likely because he always had. Which was why every time Ed told him to put “some” away for a rainy day, Merrill told him to fuck off and mind his own business.

“Ed’s brother, Merrill, has a huge storage unit,” Emily said. “It’s one of those climate-controlled fancy places where he keeps three or four vintage Porsches, an Aston Martin, and some other cars—I don’t know what they are, but he bought them at auctions.
